JustMarried is a one-of-a-kind collection spanning over seven decades of triumphant queer stories—through today. Its mission is to share these blueprints for the future far and wide, ensuring that our community’s history, heroes, and hard-won victories can never be erased. Future generations deserve to know that we have been here before, with less support—and we won.

Each courageous story, reflecting a rich diversity of age, race, religion, gender, and gender identity, serves as a roadmap for what’s possible. Together, they show not only why our community fought to live and love out loud—but exactly how they did it.

Rainbow Steel is a survivor-led support collective for LGBTQ individuals of ANY gender identity who have experienced abuse, abusive relationships, or domestic violence. We exist to reclaim our power, rebuild in solidarity, and heal without shame. There are no restrictions on what kind of abuse; what matters is that it affects you.

We honor every survivor’s pace, voice, and truth, no matter their past or present circumstances. We meet people where they are at. Through peer support, solidarity, empathy, community connection, and a trauma-informed mentality, we create a safe space where strength is measured simply by existing. If you are here, you are enough.

At Rainbow Steel, we are vulnerable AND unbreakable. Together, we rise-- not despite what we’ve endured, but because of it, with the full weight of our stories behind us.

Thursday Noods is a casual, weekly social group that may become your new favorite weekly excuse to slurp noodles and socialize with others! We meet every Thursday at 6:30 PM in the PCNJ parking lot for light introductions and a fun icebreaker before heading out at 7:00 PM sharp to enjoy noodles at one of several local shops within walking distance (or driving, if the weather’s rough). It's also a great way to meet new people, chat, and share laughs. Most meals range from $10–$25 depending on your appetite. Sometimes we grab dessert afterward as well!

Peer-based support group for all parents, guardians, and caregivers who identify as LGBTQ+ in need of a little community care

Welcome to Queer Parents and Guardians Support! In 2024 a small group of queer and trans parents from many walks of life, who have spent the last few years finding support and community with each other, got to talking. What do being queer and bringing up little humans have in common? They’re both lifelong journeys that are all at once beautiful, wonderful, chaotic, fulfilling, scary, and HARD! And if you’re going to survive and thrive walking these lifelong paths, you need community to do it. That’s when we realized, particularly in these times, we couldn’t be the only ones looking for what we’ve been trying to build. So we’re starting a group! QPGS is a peer-based support group for all parents, guardians, and caregivers who identify as LGBTQ+ in need of a little community care.

ACLU's Freedom To Be Campaign: Panel Making Series

The Freedom to Be campaign is an ACLU-led initiative that seeks to center the voices and experiences of trans people in America through the creation of a mobile monument to be installed on the National Mall next year on Saturday, May 17.

This art installation will be comprised of individual quilt squares that are decorated by trans people from across the country as they answer the question, “What does it mean to be free as a trans person?” The campaign aims to shift the narrative about trans Americans by illustrating an affirmative vision of trans joy in which everyone can live as their true, authentic selves.

The Pride Center of New Jersey will be contributing a 6 ft x 6 ft panel to this installation and we want your input! Throughout the first two weeks of April, we will reserve space at the Center for folks to drop by and contribute to our panel. All materials will be provided by the Pride Center.

Join us for an informative session hosted by the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights (DCR) focusing on the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (LAD).

The presentation will offer a comprehensive overview of LAD, highlighting its significance in promoting equality and preventing discrimination, and cover the various protected categories such as race, religion, gender, national origin, nationality, ancestry, marital status, domestic partnership/civil union status, and disability.

Garden State Equality's Transgender Day of Visibility Lunch and Learn is a community-driven initiative to celebrate and support the Transgender and Gender Diverse community.

This Lunch and Learn will be centered on a discussion about “Executive Orders and Building Resiliency,” an opportunity for trans folx and allies to gather information about the current attacks on transgender people in the nation.

Agnostic women's sobriety group, welcoming to trans and nonbinary individuals

Women for Sobriety (WFS) is an in-person support group for women with problematic substance use. The only program by women and for women, WFS provides supportive, empowering, and life-affirming principles that address the unique needs and challenges of women in recovery. Women for Sobriety is agnostic. We hold secular, nonreligious meetings devoid of religious discourse and prayer (No “higher power” necessary). We are independent, competent, self-reliant women who are in charge of our own lives. Women for Sobriety embraces all expressions of female identity and welcomes our sisters from the LGBTQ+ community and those with trans experiences. Women for Sobriety meetings provide a safe space for women, free of misogyny, sexist literature, racism, homophobia, transphobia, ageism, obesophobia, and nationalism. Women for Sobriety is not affiliated with any other recovery groups. WFS Motto: We are capable and competent, caring and compassionate, always willing to help another, bonded together in overcoming our addictions. PCNJ Presents: Preview of "Femenine" :: Sat, 2/15/25

PCNJ Presents: Preview of "Femenine" - Saturday, Feb 15th 2025, 2:30PM

Now more than ever we need to uplift queer stories. We've got a long fight ahead of us and we won't make it if we don't find moments of joy amongst the chaos.

Join us on Saturday, February 15 at the Pride Center of NJ at 2:30PM as we showcase excerpts from "Femenine", a dance performance by Kyle Marshall Choreography. Immediately following the performance, audience members will be able to speak directly with the dancers and choreographers. This workshop is supported by the 2024 NEFA National Dance Project Grant.

Space is limited, so RSVPs are required.

"A choreographic voice like no one else's" (New York Times), @kmchoreo sees the dancing body as a container of history, an igniter of social reform, and a site of celebration. Keep an eye out for the full performance of "Femenine" on March 29 at 7PM hosted in the Kean Black Box Theatre in Madison, NJ.

PCNJ Statement on Recent Federal Events

We are stronger as a community when we stand together with resilience and support for one another.

In spite of the numerous challenges facing us today, the Pride Center of New Jersey remains committed to providing and protecting queer spaces for all NJ residents. We know that many of you are feeling increased stress and anxiety in your daily lives right now but rest assured that you are not alone.

Although there is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding many of the recent federal changes, this message serves to provide clarification, reassurance, and resources for our local community members.

Clarity on the Executive Orders

Following his January 20th inauguration, President Trump signed a flurry of executive orders (EOs) on a broad range of issues (the National Council of Nonprofits maintains an overview of these EOs here ). Many of these raise concerns but are consistent with what we anticipated. While this is alarming, it's important to remember that EOs do not create new laws without congressional approval and can be revoked or challenged in court. In fact, many of these EOs are actively being challenged throughout the court system today. That being said, we recognize that these executive orders hold wide reaching implications regarding our community’s future. We at the Pride Center of New Jersey will do our best to share relevant updates as we are able but unfortunately do not have the expertise or capacity to provide a high frequency of consistent support or guidance on these developing orders, memorandums, and proclamations. Instead, we highly encourage you to subscribe to updates from Garden State Equality , the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) , and Lambda Legal as well.

How will this impact the Pride Center of New Jersey?

We are proud to function as a 100% volunteer run organization which relies heavily on local community support and donations. At this time, we do not anticipate a negative impact to our organization’s funding and offered services. We will continue hosting a variety of peer-based support, social groups, and youth programs at the Center. We will continue to provide opportunities throughout the year to educate and celebrate the community. And we will continue to share information and resources that will help you all live your most authentic lives.

Will we see any changes at the Pride Center of New Jersey?

Our goal is now and has always been to create a safe and welcoming space for members of the LGBTQ+ community. In light of everything, we are evaluating our systems and processes to ensure we are doing our part in maintaining every individual’s privacy and safety. With that in mind, you may notice we have already implemented a few changes to improve the security of our staff and spaces:

Personally identifiable information of volunteers (including the leadership team) has been removed from the website
Tighter security and processes regarding joining some of our virtual spaces (webinars, social media, etc)
Updated locking systems for our physical location

There may be more in the short/long term, but we will do our best to communicate any future changes in a timely and transparent manner. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us at president@pridecenter.org .

How will this immediately affect people who live in NJ?

PCNJ has been in contact with the offices of our local representatives, including Congressman Frank Pallone and Senator Cory Booker. We are encouraged by and appreciate the attentive concern our local representatives are taking with these issues. The Pride Center will continue to seek guidance and share clarifications on ongoing legislative changes. Some immediate things to bring to your attention:

State-Issued Identification: As per our most recent communications with local representatives, at this time, New Jersey residents are still able to apply for name and/or gender marker change to their NJ state-issued identification (such as birth certificates and driver's licenses including Real IDs).
Federal Issued Identification: Unfortunately, it is not recommended that you attempt new applications for name and/or gender marker change on government-issued identification documents, including passports, visas, and Global Entry cards at this time. Applications for passport renewals with both amended and already-changed gender markers are additionally not recommended at this time. All such applications are currently on hold at this time. Please see Garden State Equality’s January 28th Press Release for more information.

We know. This is a lot to take in. The next few days/months/years are going to be challenging for us all, emotionally, personally, and professionally. Below you will find some resources and reminders that may help (many of which you can find directly on our website as well). We just want to remind you again that you are not alone. Your friends and family at the Pride Center of New Jersey are committed to realizing a future where every member of the Rainbow Community is able to live a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life. It may take a little longer, but we’ll get there.

Reminders for Taking Care of Ourselves and Our Community

Take Care of Yourself: Practice self-care. Eat, hydrate, and rest. Seek mental health support as you need through licensed therapists and counselors. Find ways to relieve stress such as journaling, meditation, exercise, connecting with friends and family, or unplugging from technology.
Stay Informed but Step Back as You Need: Be intentional as you keep up to date and use reliable sources. While at times a useful tool for forming online communities, social media can quickly become a breeding ground for potentially misleading information that may leave us feeling quickly fatigued. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, take a step back and limit overexposure.
Stay Connected with Your Community: Schedule time with your support system, be that friends, family, therapists, or community groups such as the ones offered by the Pride Center. Lean on each other. Join local in person and online community groups where you feel safe expressing yourself in authentic ways.
Advocate Together: Think of what your capacity allows. If you are able to extend time or monetary support to collaborate with and empower local community groups, the Pride Center offers numerous opportunities to get involved. True Sisters is a peer-based group supporting individuals leaning towards a trans- feminine gender identity. Whether you might be questioning your gender, or you’re already taking steps to feel more aligned with your gender, this group is geared towards expressing and supporting the experiences of both transgender women and non-binary trans-feminine individuals. We’re here to support and affirm each other on our journeys, whether that journey is closer to the traditional conception of a binary transition or something different but authentic to ourselves.

Empowering LGBTQ+ Youth Session - Thursday, 12/05/24

Join Belonging for an event featuring Dr. Juan R. Pantoja-Patiño , Psychologist and Researcher from the University of Notre Dame. This interactive session, designed for parents and guardians of LGBTQ+ youth—including trans, nonbinary, and questioning/curious youth—will take place on December 5 at 6 PM CST (7PM EST) .

What to Expect

This session will equip you with actionable strategies for supporting your child’s educational journey, fostering stronger home-school connections, and advocating for their well-being in school. Whether navigating school systems or creating a more inclusive home environment, this event will provide tools and insights to make a meaningful impact. A Q&A session will follow to address your specific questions and concerns.

About the Guest Speaker

Dr. Juan R. Pantoja-Patiño (he/him/él) is a first-generation, queer Mexican-American from Chicago, IL, with extensive experience supporting LGBTQ+ individuals in academic and therapeutic settings. Currently a Staff Clinician at Notre Dame University, he holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Loyola University Chicago. Dr. Pantoja-Patiño is known for his collaborative, warm, and humorous approach to therapy, specializing in Emotion-Focused Therapy. His professional interests include relational concerns, grief and loss, LGBTQ+ issues, and bilingual therapy in English and Spanish.

Statement :: 2024 US Elections

In the wake of the recent election news we recognize that the results imply devastating consequences for the trans members of our community and the LBGTQIA+ community at large. The future we are facing is uncertain, and we feel the weight of that stress with you. It is understandable to feel overwhelmed, but in times like these, it is more important than ever to seek out community. We are stronger when we work together.

The Pride Center of New Jersey will continue to offer safe, welcoming spaces open to those seeking support and community. We are proud to be a resource for LGBTQIA+ individuals by offering a variety of peer-based support, social, and youth programs. We also welcome anyone interested in supporting the community to inquire about volunteer opportunities , which include:

Trauma-Informed Art Therapy Workshop

Community BBQ + Health Fair :: Sun 7/21/24

Join us for our annual Community BBQ + Health Fair at Thompson Park!

Our annual PCNJ Community BBQ is returning this year on Sunday, July 21st from 12-4pm ! This event is open to PCNJ attendees/patrons, volunteers, group facilitators, sponsors and donors, and their friends and families. The event will include all you can eat food, games, and activities. This event also features several health and wellness partners offering free HIV testing, blood pressure screenings, and information.

A suggested donation of $15 for each adult is encouraged to help support PCNJ ($5 off if you volunteer or bring food). This is a rain or shine event! There will be a covered shelter at the grove. Hot dogs, burgers, veggie burgers, and beverages will be provided. Additional food and beverage will be supplied by you! Please note that this is an alcohol and substance free event.

If you plan to attend this event, help us get a headcount by completing the RSVP form . You can also you this form to sign up to bring a side dish or dessert.

Statement: Barnegat Township BOE

Concerns about school policies by Barnegat Township's BOE

On Tuesday, 06/12/2024, Barnegat Township's Board of Education removed crucial protections for transgender public school students in their district. They voted to abolish "Policy 5756: Transgender Students", putting T+/trans students at risk of being outed to their parents and caretakers without these students' consent. This policy decision goes directly against the lived experiences and prevailing research about T+/trans students' well-being, including from the viewpoints of housing and mental health. The Pride Center of New Jersey's previous statement " School Policies Targeting Transgender Youth " (dated 09/26/2023) cites that research, and its timestamp notes how this work to support our rainbow students is ongoing. Policy advocacy and community engagement where we live are crucial parts of how we can make a difference. We can also cultivate support through resources like the 24/7 crisis hotline Trans Lifeline (877-565-8860) and the support groups at the Pride Center of New Jersey support groups , which include groups for youth.

Statement: Gender-Inclusive Bathrooms

Support for Gender-Inclusive Bathrooms

Greetings all,

The Pride Center of New Jersey is issuing the following statement in support of gender-inclusive public and business bathroom policies that promote the safety and well-being of trans, non-binary, gender expansive, and other T+ people. Peer-reviewed studies show that the passage of regressive bathroom laws and policies is not correlated with the number or frequency of criminal incidents in bathrooms. Peer-reviewed studies also show that denial of access to appropriate bathrooms is associated with mental health challenges for transgender and gender nonconforming youth and adults. We at PCNJ have heard time and time again from members of the LGBTQIA2S+ and allied community that offering gender-inclusive bathroom alternatives greatly reduces stress, anxiety, and gender dysphoria in their daily lives.

In May of 2022, a Middlesex County restaurant’s management staff targeted Erin Kinahan, a trans woman, for using what they claimed was the inappropriate bathroom. The staff used transphobic, transmisic behavior and language against Kinahan, who was eating dinner with other community members from the Pride Center of New Jersey directly after attending an in-person support group at the Center in Highland Park. Kinahan and her supporters are planning their second protest in front of the establishment on Sunday, October 15th, 2023 at 12:30PM, as a trial-by-jury is pending to address the incident.

We at the Pride Center of New Jersey are concerned about the safety of our LGBTQIA2S+ community members, and given that these transmisic, transphobic actions occurred in Edison in Middlesex County, in our own backyard, it’s clear to us that our work is not yet over. Our all-volunteer staff and grassroots work is dedicated to making people feel as welcomed in their neighborhoods as they do when they attend PCNJ support groups, participate in events, or when they just stop by to hang out at the Center.

Please plug into some of the Pride Center of New Jersey’s support and social offerings, both virtual and in person, and join us in building communities where discrimination against us as LGBTQIA2S+ people is not tolerated, and is met with accountability for its perpetrators and care for its survivors.

Statement: School Policies Targeting Transgender Youth

Concerns about school policies which will harm LBTQIA+ youth in New Jersey

The Pride Center of New Jersey is a community and resource center serving the LGBTQIA2S+ community and their allies across the state of New Jersey since 1994.

In alignment with our stated vision for equality and our mission to cultivate an environment of acceptance for future generations, the Pride Center of New Jersey will below describe our concerns about school policies which will harm transgender, nonbinary, genderqueer, and gender nonconforming youth in New Jersey. Such policies include those recently passed by the Hanover, Middletown, Manalapan, and Marlboro Boards of Education and one under consideration at Colts Neck.

We write as a community resource center, not as a participant in or supporter of any legislation, court case, or political party. Instead, we write to express the thoughts of our community members on this issue and to remind our neighbors that we are a resource for affirmation, education, and support.

The Policies

These new policies vary among districts and typically include some form of the below rules.

Require teachers and staff to surveil student gender expression, including clothing, behavior, statements, extracurriculars, and use of names, nicknames, and pronouns.
Require teachers and staff to report on students’ gendered behavior to parents even in violation of a student’s consent (often called “forced outing”).
Permit parents to “override” a student’s asserted gender, force teachers and staff to misgender transgender students, and force students to use facilities inconsistent with their gender.

This third policy is especially concerning because of its parallel to conversion therapy tactics, which have no place in the child’s classroom. Research has established that conversion therapy and its methods are dangerous practices that cause long-term harm.

Current school policies already in place allow schools to share details about students’ gender identities with parents as appropriate. PCNJ has no objection to consensual supportive communication among schools, families and other caregivers, and students. What we do oppose are blanket requirements for surveillance and reporting on every suspected transgender youth, especially when it violates the trust and consent of the student and potentially endangers them.

These policies are the only rules in these districts that mandate reporting based on a protected identity. Discriminatory policies that specifically target trans kids for differential treatment, surveillance, and school intervention stigmatize trans youth. As a community organization committed to cultivating equality and acceptance, we decry these policies.

Additionally, we are deeply concerned by the rhetoric that these policies and their advocates use. We condemn in the strongest possible terms any attempt to cast LGBTQIA2S+ people as “groomers,” or any other term associated with pedophilia or violence, based on their identity. These irresponsible accusations are not only unsubstantiated but recycle virulent anti-gay rhetoric from decades past. We also reject attempts to separate community members of trans, nonbinary, and other gender nonconforming experience from others under the LGBTQIA2S+ umbrella. As an organization deeply invested in community and friendship, we refuse to divide our vibrant community against itself.

While we are heartened to hear that these policies are under injunction and therefore not currently at risk of harming trans young people, we are deeply concerned that they were approved at all. If these policies are ultimately enacted, we anticipate serious and irreparable harm to the young people in our community. We are saddened by the support they received from our neighbors and community members using anti-LGBTQIA2S+ rhetoric associated with hate groups.

The Impact and The Research

As a Center that provides youth support programming, we know firsthand the heartbreaking consequences of forced outing, hostile school environments, and unsupportive households. We are part of the safety net for young people harmed by the kinds of behaviors which these policies would enforce. Every year, we meet young people who struggle with the consequences of stigmatization and family rejection, including poor mental health, houselessness, and struggles with substance use. These impacts are disproportionately felt by children who are already marginalized by structural injustices like income inequality, anti-Blackness, and ableism.

Our experiences with trans youth harmed by outing and rejection are not unique. In 2022, the Society for Research in Child Development found that trans youth are an especially vulnerable school population: “Transgender and gender diverse youth (TGD), which includes non-binary youth, are 2-3 times more likely than their cisgender peers to experience discrimination and a lack of safety in schools. TGD youth are also 2-3 times more likely to report suicidality, depression, and anxiety than cisgender youth.” Research also shows that nearly half of unhoused LGBTQIA2S+ youth go without a safe place to sleep because their family rejected their identity. While we know many parents love their children unconditionally and families in the U.S. are becoming more accepting of queer and trans kids, the documented prevalence of irreparable harm is too common and too widespread to ignore.

Trans children are uniquely vulnerable to harm and the best-known remedy is an accepting environment. Research shows that support from family and caregivers as well as mentors like teachers, coaches, faith leaders, and other community members is key to the wellbeing of queer and trans youth. The more places where trans youth receive gender-affirming support (like using the right name and pronouns), the less they experience symptoms of depression and suicidal ideation or behavior. These findings are supported by further research by the National Education Policy Center and by scholars of child development and child psychology across many institutions.

In harmony with this research, we affirm the importance of support from parents and caregivers in a youth’s journey regarding their gender, orientation, and identity. We urge New Jersey families to cultivate equitable and accepting environments for queer and trans youth through collaboration and compassion, not through surveillance.

The Center

If you support these harmful policies because you worry about not being aware of your child’s feelings or not having the tools to support a trans or gender nonconforming child, we can help.

We understand and empathize with parents who love their children and want the best for them. We know it can be challenging for parents when their kids are experiencing things that are unexpected or that parents might not understand yet. We understand that even supportive parents may be anxious when they learn that their child is questioning their gender.

Beginning this process at school can serve as a low-stakes environment for children to try out their identity through words, clothes, or play before making larger decisions. Sometimes, LGBTQIA2S+ people practice coming out to other people before coming out to their family precisely because their family’s response is most important to them. If a child begins this process at school, it is likely because school is a trusted, safe, and familiar place for them. The best way to be involved is to continue affirming for your child that your home is also a trusted and safe place. Larger decisions, like beginning medical transition or legally changing a name, still require full parental knowledge and consent and the proposed policies do not impact this process.

We want to remind parents that they have a resource in the Pride Center of New Jersey, which has served the New Jersey LGBTQIA2S+ community and their loved ones for nearly three decades. We are here to refer parents and caregivers to resources, answer their questions, and connect them with support groups that are just for them, like Allies Assemble . We invite concerned parents to sit down with PCNJ parents to discuss solutions, like making room for your child to come out to you or navigating your own emotional experience of family changes. Let’s problem-solve together for the wellbeing of New Jersey’s young people.

Statement on Yesterday’s Attack on the Capitol

In the aftermath of yesterday’s events in Washington, we at The Pride Center firmly

condemn the violent attacks at the Capitol building. These senseless acts led to four

unnecessary deaths and represent an act of violence against our very system of

government.

This country can succeed only when the principles of its democracy are upheld, with the

peaceful transition of power chief among them. As many have noted, regardless of political

ideology or party affiliation, we must continue to work now more than ever towards a

more perfect union. We at The Pride Center call on our state and national legislators to tell

the truth, to put country over political expediency, and to hold those accountable who fail

to do so. To do otherwise is to risk the destruction of the ever-fragile American democratic

experiment.

Yesterday’s assault on the Capitol was an assault on the democratic process, and it will take

a concerted effort from both our elected leaders and our fellow citizens to repair the

damage that was done. This damage predates yesterday’s events, however, and there must

be a period of healing that also addresses the root causes that ultimately culminated in the

terrible display we witnessed, including inequity across racial, ethnic, class, and other

demographic lines.

As we continue forward from the events at the Capitol, we recognize the need to reflect and

cope. If you are looking for community, please visit our website for our calendar of social

and support groups that are meeting remotely. We also have mental health resources

available. Yesterday’s events were truly horrific, but together we must work to better our

nation and our community. The Pride Center is committed to that mission.

Dear Pride Center of New Jersey Volunteers:

I, along with the other board members, would like to say THANK YOU for all of your work and continued support of the Pride Center during this extremely stressful time. With your help, we've continued to be busy. During the months of April through July, we were able to schedule and hold over 50 social and support group sessions (mostly virtually), we worked to get out the LGBTQ vote, and encourage LGBTQ folks to complete the Census. We’ve responded to about 300 emails we received requesting help and information through our website. These numbers will only continue to grow.

We can do nothing at the Pride Center without all of you. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, thank you, thank you.

The Pride Center is grateful to the LGBTQ+ community and allies for their generous donations, and to all of the talented performers who gave of their time to make Pride Idol a successful virtual fundraiser! The June 5th event featured The Center’s own Jeff Kagan who served as emcee, while performers like Hedda Lettuce graced us via Zoom from Mexico.

Other talent included Harmonica Sunbeam, Ron B., Voltaire with Danny O’Neil, Rich Kiamco, Josh Zuckerman, Vonni - a.k.a Phenomenal Risen Woman, Robin Renee, Liz Glazer, and Bob Egan. The diverse lineup delivered music, poetry, comedy, and a book reading.

Pride Center Statement on George Floyd

The Pride Center of NJ was established as a safe and welcoming environment for individuals to find peace and acceptance. It is in that spirit that we strongly condemn the systemic violence and anti-Black racism that led to the murder of George Floyd. We are outraged by the senselessness of this act and we implore our community join us in speaking out against injustice. If silence equals death, then we must all speak out.

It is not enough for us to be proud lesbian, gay, bi, trans, non-binary, or queer individuals. We must recognize that everyone who identifies as LGBTQ is also a rainbow of Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Asian and Caucasian. To be welcoming and inclusive means to open our arms fully to the entire community and ensure that everyone is free from oppression. We must do more than strive to be an inclusive community. We must do more than quietly admonish racism. We must call out racism whenever we see it. Fifty years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people.” The voices calling for hate are loud. We must be louder.

We mourn the loss of George Floyd’s life, and we wish to remember that he was more than a man who was brutally murdered on a city street. He had a loving family, he had been a gifted athlete, was a talented rapper, and a hard worker. Just as we are more than our gender identity and sexual orientation, he was more than the color of his skin.

COVID-19 Center Update

First and foremost, I hope you and your loved ones are safe and healthy.

These are trying and uncertain times. Just a few months ago, who could have predicted the world would be united in a common cause: overcoming the human impacts of COVID-19 – the loss of life, feelings of isolation and loneliness, concerns about health and fears of economic uncertainty. But here we are, navigating this together.

Unfortunately, our opening date is still unknown. While it is essential that we adopt new ways of interacting to protect the health of our community, doing so can bring moments of unease and isolation. We are looking at what our center will look like when we do reopen. There will be many changes as we adapt to what will be our new normal for the near future. I will keep you posted on these changes when our reopening date is determined.

While the economic impact of our centers closing is not something I ever wanted us to face, I assure you that the Pride Center of New Jersey will get through this. We will be around to serve the LGBTQ+ community for many years to come.

COVID-19 has brought out some of the best in humanity, including our communities continued demonstrations of resilience and commitment to supporting all. These are the moments where we experience the very best of all of us. Please take care of yourselves and your loved ones. I know that we are going to get through this, together.

Extended Closure - President's Message

Dear Members, Volunteers, and Visitors,

I hope you are safe and have been faring as well as possible under extraordinarily difficult circumstances. I write to share an update on The Pride Center of New Jersey’s plans moving forward.

While remaining hopeful that this isn’t a long-term situation, we have decided, after careful consideration, to extend our closure beyond the originally stated date. As of now, we will be closed until further notice to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Due to the rapidly changing nature of this public health crisis, The Pride Center of New Jersey feels it is best to keep our reopening date open ended, rather than share hypothetical dates that, by necessity, might need to shift. We will constantly evaluate the situation and keep you posted.

We will continue working with our group leaders to discuss options for teleconferencing and video conferencing.

We hope you understand, and we will update you as soon as possible.

President's Message on Pride Center Closure

Dear Members, Volunteers, and Visitors,

I wanted to personally reach out to you and provide an update on the

actions that The Pride Center of New Jersey is taking to prevent the spread

of the COVID-19 virus and support the health and well-being of our

community.

In response to the increasing call for social distancing and other

precautionary measures related to preventing the spread of COVID-19

(coronavirus), The Pride Center of New Jersey will be closing until further

notice. All groups, events, meetings and room reservations scheduled are

currently canceled or postponed. Please know that this decision was made

after much careful thought and deliberation, and is intended to protect our

members, volunteers, and center visitors, particularly the most vulnerable

who we serve.

Unfortunately, the duration of this closure is unknown. Initially we are

looking at a two-week closure. We will continue to work with and take the

advice of federal, state and local authorities. It is our intention to reopen as

soon as it is safe for all. We will constantly evaluate the situation and keep

you posted. Please follow our website and social media accounts for

updated information when available.

We will be working with our group leaders to discuss options for tele-

conferencing and video conferencing options.

We appreciate your understanding. The world is dealing with an enormous

issue with great human impact. We believe this decision is in the best

interest of all.

COVID-19 Update

The Pride Center of New Jersey values the health and well-being of all Pride Center members, group attendees, volunteers and their families. As you are aware, there are confirmed cases of COVID-19 (coronavirus) in New Jersey. We want you to know that we are following local, state, and national health care expert guidance and recommendations.

You can help reduce the spread of infection. The best ways to reduce the risk of getting this or any viral respiratory infection include:

• Washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick

• Cleaning and disinfecting objects and surfaces

• Staying at home away from others if you are sick

• Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, then throwing

the tissue in the trash and washing your hands

Please, do not attend Pride Center events or group meetings if you have cold or flu-like symptoms (elevated temperature, fever, cough, shortness of breath). We all need to work together to protect each other and the Pride Center Community.

We will continue to follow the guidance and advice of state, local, and federal health organizations. It is our hope that the center can continue to operate as normal. We will keep you posted if this changes.

100 People Attend Census Community Kick-Off

Event is part of Effort to Engage Hard to Count Populations in the 2020 Census

The Pride Center of New Jersey hosted a Census Community Kick-Off on February 23 at Pino’s Wine Shoppe in Highland Park. The event was an opportunity for the local community to learn about the critical importance of the upcoming 2020 Census, explore local nonprofit organizations, and interact with community members. It was designed to alert the public that every person who resides in the state needs to be counted. More than $23 billion is at stake in federal funds for New Jersey. An under-count will limit less funding for the state and could result in fewer representatives for New Jersey in Congress.

Highland Park Mayor Gayle Brill Mittler addressed the crowd and reminded everyone about the critical need for everyone to be counted. She estimated that more than $3.5 million was at stake just for Highland Park alone.

June Burton, Partnership Specialist from the U.S. Census Bureau emphasized the need for the LGBTQ community to be respond to the Census as it impacts all of us.

Karen Ford, Director of Communications for the Pride Center stated, “If you are a New Jerseyan you need to be counted. So much of what impacts our daily lives depends on funding from Census data. Schools, roads, emergency services, unemployment insurance, and so much more are based on how we respond tho the Census.”

The event boasted free food, prizes and giveaways for everyone.

As mandated by the Constitution, the U.S. Census counts the residents of the United States every ten years. Participating in the Census is everyone’s civic duty, but not everyone responds to it. In 2010, for example, fewer than 60% of New Brunswick residents were counted. There are many hard to count populations that have low response rates and LGBT individuals are considered part of a Hard to Count (HTC) population. Other HTCs include, but are not limited to African Americans, Latinos/Latinx, Asians, Non-Native English speakers, college students, young children, men 18-49, the incarcerated, and the elderly.

Members of HTC communities may be wary of responding to the Census for fear of their immigration status, concern about legal reprisal, or a fear of government in general. However, “By law, your census responses cannot be used against you by any government agency or court in any way—not by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), not by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), not by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and not by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).” (Census.gov)

The Kick-Off is part of a $50,000 Department of State Grant The Pride Center has been awarded to lead the effort to engage LGBT individuals in Middlesex County and ensure that the community is fully counted in the 2020 Census. The project, entitled LGBT Census T.E.A.M. (Targeted Education and Awareness to Multidimensional-Populations) 2020, is a coordinated, county-wide effort which strives to increase Census participation rates for the LGBT community.

Pride Center of New Jersey Gala Celebrates 25 Years Serving the Community

The Pride Center of New Jersey celebrates its 25th Anniversary of service to New Jersey's LGBTQ community on Saturday, September 21, with their first annual gala, An Evening Out, at the Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick.

For 25 years, the Center has served as a welcoming, non-judgmental space for the state's LGBTQ community to find support, friendship, and resources. Over its 25-year history, the Center has evolved from a secret support group for gay men into a full-fledged community center with programs for everyone in the LGBTQ community.

The Center's President, Vic Schimmenti highlighted that "The Pride Center has been a lifeline for so many in the LGBTQ community. Whether it's for our Youth Drop-In program, or other support or health education programming, free HIV testing or for social engagement, the Center continues to serve as a vital hub for New Jersey's LGBTQ community."

Guests will be entertained by singer-songwriter and powerful vocalist Radha, who was featured on NBC's The Voice.

Radha says "It was natural for me to partner with The Pride Center since I believe in equal rights for people. Love shouldn't have limits. Let's celebrate change." - RADHA

Governor Murphy and First Lady Tammy Snyder Murphy, unable to attend, will also offer their regards to gala-goers via a video message. Murphy has championed LGBTQ rights as governor, and has recognized community advancements with The Pride Center in the past, including at the Governor's Pride Reception.

Governor Phil Murphy has been quoted as saying: "It is of the greatest importance that everyone feels accepted in New Jersey, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation."

The event is sponsored by Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, online financial marketplace LendEDU, healthcare provider WellCare, and KP Edgestone Realty, among others. Fundraising Trustee Patricia Nagle said, "We are deeply grateful to our generous sponsors for supporting this event and our Center's vital work."

Highland Park, NJ – The Pride Center of New Jersey has been awarded a $50,000 Department of State Complete Count Commission Grant to lead an effort to engage LGBT individuals in Middlesex County and ensure that the community is fully counted in the 2020 Census. The project, entitled LGBT Census T.E.A.M. (Targeted Education and Awareness to Multidimensional-Populations) 2020, is a coordinated, county-wide effort which strives to increase Census participation rates for the LGBT community. There is a critical need that every person who resides in the state be counted as more than $23 billion is at stake in federal funds. An under-count will result in less funding for the state and fewer representatives for New Jersey in Congress.

Mark McSpirit, president of the Pride Center stated, “The project will launch a targeted outreach campaign that capitalizes on the trusted name The Center has built within the LGBTQ+ community since its founding 25 years ago. It will educate the public about the importance of being counted.”

The Pride Center, which has a long history of working with local community partners, will collaborate alongside other local LGBT and ally nonprofits in targeting HTC individuals. It will engage in a campaign to educate the public, encourage participation, as well as establish a Community Census Support Center at the Pride Center where visitors can log in and file with the Census electronically.

The mission of The Pride Center of New Jersey is to provide a safe and welcoming space for all individuals who identify as LGBTQ to find support, educational tools, health and education resources, and social opportunities within a community of acceptance. Comprehensive programming in support of this mission includes lesbian, gay, trans and family resources, social groups and free HIV testing.
